Rounds 15 to 18 Eligibility

Player eligibility for selection into sides for Home and Away Rounds (Rules 3.7 & 3.8)

MBA player selection guidelines (Rule 3.7) continue to apply during Rounds 15 to 18, with the addition of restrictions imposed by Rule 3.8. Clubs will be aware that playing members who are ineligible (and not exempted or issued with a permit) in a side leaves the side/club open to protest from opposition clubs.

Rule 3.8.1 describes the eligibility for selection into Pennant sides for Rounds 1 to 14 and Rounds 15 to 18.

Rule 3.8.2 (also summarised in Flow Chart towards the end of the Conditions of Play) applies the information from Rule 3.8.1 to player selection for Rounds 15 to 18.

There might be a player or two who misses being selected in the side that they had played many or all their games in for Rounds 1 to 14. The non selected player may be available for selection in the next ranked side under the exemption in Rule 3.8.2 alongside the “regular” players in that side.

Up to 3 players per game can be included for selection in the next ranked side under the exemption in Rule 3.8.2. Examples are below.
* A player who has not played any games in the next ranked side or a lower ranked side in Rounds 1 to 14 cannot be selected for the next ranked or lower ranked sides in Rounds 15 to 18 without an “exceptional circumstance” permit.
• A player who has played the majority of their games in Rounds 1 to 14 in a side and who missed out on selection for the that side can be selected in the next ranked side for Rounds 15 to 18 under the exemption if they have played a game or more in next ranked side or a lower ranked side in Rounds 1 to 14.
• A player who has recently been demoted (prior to Round 15) into a side can continue to be selected in that side under the exemption.
Some guidelines and examples have been added (next pages).

Player A1 has played all their games from Round 1 to Round 14 in the highest ranked Pennant side.
For Rounds 15 to 18 player A1 is only eligible to be selected in the highest ranked side unless issued with an “exceptional circumstance” permit to play in the second ranked side.

Player B1 has played most of their games from Round 1 to Round 14 in the highest ranked Pennant side but has played one or a few games in a lower ranked side.
For Rounds 15 to 18 player B1 is eligible to be selected in the highest ranked side. If not selected in that side player B1 may be selected in the second ranked side as one of up to 3 exempted players in similar circumstances.

Player A2 has played many of their games from Round 1 to Round 14 in the same Pennant side and possibly with a few games in a higher ranked side.
For Rounds 15 to 18, player A2 is eligible to be selected in their usual side and can be selected in a higher ranked side but cannot be selected in a lower ranked side unless issued with an “exceptional circumstance” permit to play in a lower ranked side.

Player B2 has played most of their games from Round 1 to Round 14 in the same Pennant side, possibly with a few games in a higher side, and has played one or a few games in a lower ranked side.
For Rounds 15 to 18, player B2 is eligible to be selected in their usual side and can be selected in a higher ranked side. If not selected in their usual side player B2 may be selected in the next lowest ranked side as one of up to 3 exempted players in similar circumstances.

Player C1 has played their games from Round 1 to Round 14 in a variety of combinations of selection across 2 sides, such as:
• beginning in one side and moving to higher ranked sides during the season; or
• beginning in one side and moving to lower ranked sides during the season; or
• moving between two sides several times during the season and has played more games in the higher ranked side
For Rounds 15 to 18, the lowest ranked side for player C1 to be eligible to be selected in will be the higher ranked of the 2 sides. Player C1 can be selected in a higher ranked side. If not selected in the higher ranked of the two sides player C1 may be selected in the lower ranked side as one of up to 3 exempted players in similar circumstances.

Player C2 has played their games from Round 1 to Round 14 in a variety of combinations of selection across 2 sides, such as:
• beginning in one side and moving to higher ranked sides during the season; or
• beginning in one side and moving to lower ranked sides during the season; or
• moving between two sides several times during the season (e.g., as a “fill in” player in the higher ranked side).

and has played with equal or more games in the lower ranked side

For Rounds 15 to 18, the lowest ranked side for player C2 to be eligible to be selected in will be the lower ranked of the 2 sides and can be selected in a higher ranked side. Player C2 will not be eligible to be selected in a lower ranked side unless issued with an “exceptional circumstance” permit.

Player D has played games from Round 1 to Round 14, in variety of combinations of selection across more than 2 sides.
For Rounds 15 to 18, the lowest ranked side for player D to be eligible to be selected in under Rule 3.8.1 will be determined as follows:
1. Start with the lowest ranked side player D has played in (Rounds 1 to 14)
2. Count games played in that side
3. Count games played in all sides above

If the number in #2 is equal to or greater than the number in #3, player D will be eligible to be selected in that side under Rule 3.8.1. Player D can be selected in a higher ranked side. Player D will not be eligible to be selected in a lower ranked side unless issued with an “exceptional circumstance” permit.

If the number in #2 is less than the number in #3,
4. Move on to the next highest side player D has played in (Rounds 1 to 14)
5. Count games played in that side and all sides below
6. Count games played in all sides above

Repeat #4, 5 & 6 until the number in #5 is equal to or greater than the number in #6. Player D will be eligible to be selected in the most recent chosen side under Rule 3.8.1. Player D can be selected in a higher ranked side.

If not selected in the most recent chosen side Player D may be selected in the next lower ranked side as one of up to 3 exempted players in similar circumstances.
